Team Grummett/Budden at Kieler Woche 2017

Harken supported 49er duo Daniel Budden and James Grummett are part of the British Sailing Team Podium Potential Pathway (P3). The pair had a string of stellar results in the 29er before graduating to its' big brother - the 49er to continue their Olympic journey. They currently split their time between sailing and studying at the University of Exeter. With the university term over the boys headed out to Kiel, Germany to take part in the internationally reknowned Kieler Woche. Here's what they got up to:

20 June
So both crew members now out in Kiel, I (Dan) have been here since Sunday and James arrived today. Today we went out for a little sail to blow off the cob webs, breeze was really up and down and all over the place but didn't matter too much as we were just hitting the boat handling hard and got a slight bit of straight line stuff in as well. Kiel week starts tomorrow with the first race at 13:00, breeze looks around 9-10knts from the Northwest which should make for some close racing. Both really looking forward to getting back racing in the boat. We'll be sure to keep you updated with results and a summary of how the day goes tomorrow.

21 June
First day of racing back in the boat completed and as expected a few silly mistakes were made but also some huge lessons learnt moving forward. We got a 3rd, 28th and 22nd in some very up and down and shifty conditions leaving us 30th overall. In all 3 races we were right up there in the top 10 and the last two races could of easily been higher had we not made two small mistakes but that's what this regatta is all about, learning the big lessons so we don't have to do it in the summer when it really counts. Sailing well and looking forward to the racing tomorrow looks like a bit more breeze forecast from a more stable direction, we'll be sure to let you all know how we get on! Thankyou to everyone for the continued support.

22 June
Day 2 of Kiel week completed and with a 19th in the first race and a 9th in the second race we move up to 29th overall and qualify for our first senior gold fleet. Wind was up and down, windier in the first race race and with a bad start it was hard to get back into it. The second race saw the opposite with lighter conditions and a good start we were able to fleet manage to secure a top 10 finish. Really happy with the progress we're making on our process goals for this event. Looking like a big day tomorrow and we also so have tracking so get on live sap tracking to watch us race, first race at 11:00 o'clock local time!! We'all keep you posted as to how we get on.

23 June
Day 3 completed along with our first day in gold fleet in the 49er. Breeze was top end, around 20knts all day and with 4 races it made for some pretty intense racing. We posted a 23rd, 19th, 19th and a 16th and were really pleased how we were right in the middle bunch for every race and even at the front for the third race until unfortunately on our last gybe we went for a swim when in 7th! Absolutely gutted but so pleased with how we were sailing the boat today and really looking forward to the 3 races tomorrow, we have now moved up to 22nd overall. Here is our glory moment caught on camera by the one and only Sally Budden when we rounded the top mark in 3rd in the third race today! There's also some shots of us getting set for the day with some upwind and downwind pre racing.

25 June
So last day of racing here in Kiel was yesterday and we posted a consistent set of results with a 24th, 22nd, 22nd in around 12-18knots on a shifty course. Again we were right in the pack and were really pleased with how we were sailing the boat, we just missed the last little gain on the course to get us ahead of the bunch which could of easily turned a result in the low 20s to a top 15. We ended up finishing 23rd overall in gold fleet and are really happy with how we progressed throughout the week. Learnt so much and it was nice to get back in the boat after a long period of time off. Now time to get home and have a small rest before we head down to Weymouth to train over July with all the lads.
