Harken to sponsor UKCRA Youth Spitfire Squad for 2015

22/6/2015

Harken have recently agreed to sponsor the UKCRA Youth Spitfire Squad for the 2015 season.  The squad is going from strength to strength with 12 teams competing at the RYA Youth Championships and aims to compete in the SL16 World Championships in France.

The Spitfire traveller series includes:

  • Solent Forts race 13 - 14 June
  • East Coast Piers race 27-28th June
  • Youth and Junior Cat Championships at Grafham 20 -22 Aug
  • Stokes Bay Cat Open and Spitfire National Championships 5-6th Sept
  • Weston SC Cat Open 26-27th Sept
  • Grafham Cat Open and Spitfire Inland Championships 17-18th Oct

The crews are from a variety of backgrounds with teams coming from the junior classes of Topper, Mirror, Cadet and other youth classes. The Spitfire teams are made up of a variety of all boy / all girl teams, with a majority being mixed teams and with ages ranging from thirteen to twenty one.  The squad is also made up of several sibling teams, which makes for some fierce competition!

The Spitfire provides the power and challenges to develop multihull skills as a stepping stone towards the NACRA 17 Olympic class, a fantastic platform for future Olympic hopefuls. The aim is to become the first stop to find experienced young multihull sailors - with four squad members already being selected for the Red Bull Foiling Challenge amongst others.

So far this year the squad have also had team members competing at Ronde Texel with one 1st in F18 as crew. Last winter the squad trained for 22 days, which has enabled some teams to go from never having sailed a catamaran before to third at the Youth Nationals in only six months.

Harken are providing technical support to the squad as teams get to grips with different way ways of setting up and sailing the boats, technical advice that is greatly valued by UKCRA cat sailors.
