CAPTIVE REEL WINCH

Captive winches are designed to suit individual drum length and storage requirements. Harken captives utilize a Brevini hydraulic industrial class auto change two-speed motor, an automatic fail-safe brake, and an epicyclic industrial class gearbox. The hub-drive-type gearbox fits within the 316 stainless steel winch drum. At the opposite end of the drum is a guarded gear train arranged to time the stainless steel feed screw at the correct speed for the sheet size specified. Standard specification includes two 24v 300mA proximity switches at each end of travel that are hard wired to a single 4-way distributor box. The inner two switches are factory-set at the design active length of the sheet. The outer two switches are intended as over-travel protection and should be used to either dump oil to tank and/or shut down the winch completely in the event of over-travel occurring.

The frame and components of the winch are manufactured in 5083 or 6000 series heat-treated marine-grade aluminum. All fastenings are 316SS.

Bearings are sealed where necessary or in some cases are of dry-run synthetic material. Grease points are provided. Both ends of the drum and the gear train are guarded. Aluminum parts are anodized and the steel parts of the drive are protected with an industrial class protection system. Each hold down point on the winch is fitted with an insulation bush. Hold down fastenings are not included.

Each winch is factory-tested from empty to full drum under live load conditions. Static load tests are also run to test brake hold and general strength.

Handing of Winches
Winches and tensioners may be specified and built individually as right- or left-hand to suit installation. RH/LH configuration must be specified at time of the order is placed.

Tensioners (Optional)
Designed to be mounted adjacent or remote to winch, turning tensioners turn the sheet through 90 degrees. The turning tensioner bearing system will sustain the winch duty loads. Tensioners are designed to operate under power when paying sheet out and maintain a light pull—independent of winch load—to ensure that line is always pulled clear of the winch. Alternatively, we can build in line tensioners which are not required to accept the main winch load and may suit individual applications better.

When hauling sheet in, the tensioner motor is valved to give a “free wheel”. The inherent drag of the motor and tensioner mechanism will ensure the sheet is tailed onto the drum with enough tension to ensure a neat lay-on.

Slack Line Sensor (Optional)
If slack line is only an occasional risk, this simpler device signals a warning or can be arranged to stop the winch. Please advise if you would like a price for this added option.

Valve Block (Supplied)
Incorporates a counterbalance valve and brake operating shuttle and tensioner control where used. No other controls, valves or pipework included. Valve block may optionally be fitted to the winch frame or remote mounted.
